  • Examine the following images used in an advertising campaign in April 2013.
  • Read the accompanying text about the campaign
  • Answer the 4 questions

A simple and powerful campaign idea from UN Women using real suggested search terms from Google's autocomplete feature.was launched in April 2013: “This campaign uses the world's most popular search engine (Google) to show how gender inequality is a worldwide problem. The adverts show the results of genuine searches, highlighting popular opinions across the world wide web.” Each ad's fine print says "actual Google search on 09/03/13." Google users in different countries were likely to get different results in searches. Autocomplete has become a popular device for social debate but these adverts drive home the daunting fact that enough people around the world share these opinions that Google has come to expect them.

[1] In what ways do these adverts create a representation of women?

[2] What is the institution [UN Women’s Rights] saying about such representations of women [consider the use of autocomplete function in this advert]?

[3] Who is the target audience for these adverts – why do you think this?

[4] What aspect s of non-commercial advertising is shown in these adverts – what methods used to sell products are charities and public service advertisers using to get their message across?
